A new poll has revealed the UK’s favourite dog breed and the results have some left some people questioning whether the nation has gone barking mad.

The national poll was conducted as part of ITV’s fun-fuelled show Britain’s Top 100 Dogs Live 2019, which asked viewers to vote on their favourites breeds during the live broadcast, with the results revealed at the end, according to The Mirror.

The show was akin to doggy heaven for dog lovers who watched as the program’s hosts Sara Cox and Ben Fogle taught viewers fun facts about the different breeds as they were paraded across the screen.

While there were plenty of popular breeds to choose from the winning dog was a surprise to many, beating dog-lover favourites the Labrador and Golden Retriever as well as the Queen’s top pick – the Corgi – to take out the number one spot.

In the end, Brits voted Staffordshire Bull Terriers — known as Staffies — as their favourite dog. Despite being originally bred for fighting in the 19th century, today Staffies are known to be extremely sociable, fun-loving and happy.

Elsewhere, one of the best jumpers in the canine world, the Boxer, claimed sixth place. If you’ve ever owned one, then you’d know Boxers are intelligent, high-energy, playful dogs that like to stay busy.

The Boarder Collie came in at seventh place, followed by the German Shepherd, Golden Retriever and mixed breeds, which rounded out the top 10.
