‘I’m disgusted’: Judge Judy slams current state of TV shows
If you’ve ever been home during the day, chances are you’ve caught a glimpse of Judge Judy at one point or another.
The show gives audiences an insight into what happens inside an American court, with Judge Judith “Judy” Sheindlin handing down her ruling, usually within 15 minutes. While millions of people tune into her own show each day, and have done since its debut in 1996, Judy has spoken out against a lot of TV shows that are airing these days.
Speaking to NY Post, she suggested that there was a formula to her show that people are attracted to, something that she believes has made her program one of the most popular in modern history.
“I think people still like order and they still like rules and they like that comfort of seeing, at least, a case from start to finish,” the 75-year-old said. She added that she was repulsed by a lot of shows appearing on TV these days.
“I’m so disgusted with things I can’t relate to on TV … and everything seems to be in such disorder in the world and people still like order.”
The mother-of-five suggested that her blunt personality and dry sense of humour was another reason why her show in particular continues to be a success. She added that she’s particularly popular with females as they “like to see women in control”. The judge suggested that women who watch her show don’t usually have a lot of control over their own lives,
Her comments come as her show enters its 22nd series. In 2015, Judy was the highest-paid TV star. She signed on for three seasons of her hit show for U$60 million (A$75.2 million) per series.
And, if you thought her tough girl persona on the show was all for show, you’d be wrong. In an interview with OBJECTified last year, the star revealed that she was forced to dump both her first and second husband because they viewed her work as a simple hobby.
“My first husband is a lovely, lovely man, but he always viewed by job as a hobby and there came a time where I resented that,” she explained. And, although still married to second husband Jerry now, she admitted that she once divorced him because of similar views.
“I just had to come to terms with the fact that men of that generation are different. They expect, even if they have no right, to be taken care of and catered to.”
