‘You beautiful man!’ Rami Malek’s Golden Globes tribute to Freddie Mercury

Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek won hearts around the world on Sunday night as he paid tribute to the great Freddie Mercury in a tear-jerking acceptance speech at the Golden Globe Awards.

The talented actor, who portrayed the Queen musician in the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody, received a rousing applause from the crowd in a thank you speech dedicated to the much-loved singer and his bandmates. 

Taking to the stage to accept his award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Film, Malek showed his true appreciation for Mercury and the role he was able to play.

“Oh my god, I am beyond moved,” he said as he took to the stage. “My heart is pounding out of my chest. This is a profound honour to be counted among such extraordinary actors, I am privileged.”

After thanking his fellow actors and producers, who worked tirelessly to put the film together, the 37-year-old turned to Queen members Brain May and Roger Taylor who watched on proudly in the crowd.

“Of course, to Queen. To you Brian May, to you Roger Taylor, for ensuring that authenticity and inclusivity exists in the music and in the world and in all of us,” he said.

“Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime. I love you, you beautiful man. This is for and because of you, gorgeous!”

Not only did Malek win one of the most highly acclaimed awards of the night, but Bohemian Rhapsody took home the award for best film, beating the likes of A Star is Born and Black Panther. 

The movie, which shares the journey of Mercury and how he led the rock band to fame in the 1970s and ’80s, has also received a flurry of other award nominations over the course of the year and is expected to be nominated for an Academy Award ahead of the Oscars on February 25. 

Speaking to press following the awards ceremony, Malek couldn’t contain his excitement to have received the award at one of Hollywood’s most glamorous of nights.

“To share this with Queen is an out of body experience,” he said. “My heart is filled with joy and love and thanks to that man who I think about every day now [Freddie Mercury].”

Fans were quick to congratulate the talented actor for his performance and portrayal of Mercury in the film, which has captured hearts across the globe.

“Don’t stop him now! What’s not to love about Rami Malek. He’s articulate, genuine, smart and humble, and such a fine actor. A great example to this new generation of actors. No one can deny that he truly deserves this,” one person wrote on Twitter.

“Wow! Such a great young actor with a bright future! So happy for your win Rami! Best wishes!” another added.

While a third said: “You so deserve this Rami… thank you for an amazing performance and Freddie is smiling down on you from heaven”.

Other major winners at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards included Best Actress for Glenn Close in The Wife, Green Book with Best Film, Musical or Comedy and Best Original Song which went to A Star is Born for the song ‘Shallow’.
