Princess Diana’s wedding to Charles ‘to be turned into a musical’

Princess Diana was arguably one of the most famous and much-loved royals in history, and her death shocked millions across the world.

Now, a new musical – named Diana – will chronicle her big day and the immediate years after alongside her husband Prince Charles.

According to broadway.com, it will have its world premiere at San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse as part of its 2018-2019 season.

Tony Award-winners Joe DiPietro and David Bryan are behind the creation of the musical, and it will have La Jolla Artistic Director and ‘Come From Away’ Tony winner Christopher Ashley directing it.

There is no official start date yet, and no confirmed cast – but it will undoubtedly come as exciting news to many across the world.

“One of the best things about La Jolla Playhouse is the way it serves as an artistic home to which amazing artists return again and again to develop their work,” Ashley told the site.

“Among my favourite long-time collaborators are Joe DiPietro and David Bryan – their new musical brings to the stage one of the greatest cultural icons in modern history, and I can’t wait to share it with Playhouse audiences next season.”

The musical will focus on the wedding itself, and the first years of the marriage.

Princess Diana married the Queen’s son and heir to the throne, Prince Charles, on July 29, 1981, at St Paul’s Cathedral, London.

The couple separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996, before the Princess’ tragic death a year later.

A description on broadway.com reads: “Diana is set in 1981 and finds the world ready for a royal wedding – but is the 20-year-old bride ready for what comes after?

“Following her fairytale union, Princess Diana faces a distant husband, an unmovable monarchy and constant media scrutiny. But her unabashed honesty, modern perspective and gentle compassion galvanizes a nation, even as it threatens the royal family’s hold on England.

“Diana will feature an eclectic original score, from classical melodies to 1980s-inspired pop and rock music.”
