Glowing Meghan Markle channels Jackie O in simple yet elegant LBD

Soon-to-be-royal Meghan Markle channeled iconic former US first lady and fashion favourite, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, in a simple yet elegant little black dress when she attended a Women’s Empowerment reception on Thursday night.

Meghan stepped out in the chic Jackie O-inspired dress alongside fiancé Prince Harry, looking elegant in a $375 (£266 ,US$289) LBD by fashion label Black Halo, which featured an asymmetrical neckline and was cinched at the waist with a thin leather belt.

She completed the simple but stylish ensemble with black, ankle-strap pumps and a black Gucci clutch. For jewellery, Meghan kept things relatively simple, with a pair of £895 (AU$1,260, US$973) diamond stud earrings from Canadian jeweller Birks.

The 36-year-old, who will tie the knot with Harry next month, opted for minimal makeup, adding just a hint of bronzer and pink lipstick to complement her lovely complexion, and styled her hair in what is becoming her signature look, a messy bun.

Harry looked every bit the prince he is, in a navy-blue suit, with a brown tie and white dress shirt.

The couple looked relaxed as they mingled and chatted with guests at the reception, which was hosted by British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson as part of a week-long Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Harry announced on Monday that Meghan would join him in his work as youth ambassador to the Commonwealth.

This event marks the launch of Platform for Girls’ Education, a campaign designed to encourage all Commonwealth countries to commit to providing 12 years of quality education for all girls.

This isn’t the first time Meghan has made a fashion statement this week as she takes up her new responsibilities in supporting Harry as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador. The bride-to-be broke a few royal traditions on her latest official outing, wearing a pretty striped sundress with a matching handbag.

The sleeveless off-white dress with a white pinstripe retails at US$1,995 (AU$2,560) from designer Altuzarra. And her bag, which she fashionably wore slung across her body, comes from Australia’s own Oroton, where it sells for relatively more modest $295 (US$229).

Meghan and Harry have now exactly one month to go before their royal wedding in St George’s Chapel on May 19.
