Harry and Meghan’s frosty family reunion as they carry out final royal engagement

It was an awkward family reunion for the Sussexes as they joined the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for Commonwealth Day on Monday, the first time the ‘Fab Four’ have been spotted together since Harry and Meghan announced they would be stepping back as senior royals.

Harry and Meghan — who wore an emerald green Emilia Wickstead dress and matching fascinator — were seated alongside Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, at the service, one row behind William and Catherine.

However, footage of the Cambridges arriving showed that the formerly close couples had little interaction with one another before the service began. While awaiting the Queen’s arrival, Meghan and Harry spoke with Edward, while William and Catherine chatted with Sophie.

On Twitter, royal fans were divided, with one user commenting: “Definitely a chill between the Cambridges and Sussexes! Megan attempted to say hello 3 times to no avail. Harry does NOT look happy at all.”

Another added: “It looks like Kate didn’t look at Harry or Meghan and William only acknowledged Meghan. Wow.”

Others thought that Catherine said ‘hi’ to Meghan, with one writing: “Kate is smiling back at her. Their greeting was friendly given the formality of the event. You can see it in this video even if her entire face isn’t showing.”

Unlike at past services, the Sussexes and Cambridges were not part of the Queen’s procession and were instead led to their seats before the service. The service marks Harry and Meghan’s final engagement as working royals, and it’s currently their last scheduled engagement before they resign from their royal duties at the end of this month.

The outing is the third joint event for the couple since returning to London for their so-called ‘farewell tour’ before they begin their new lives as private citizens from April 1. The short trip has included the Endeavour Fund Awards, the Mountbatten Music Festival and Meghan’s surprise appearance at a UK school to mark International Women’s Day.

Last week it was reported that Meghan had upset the Queen with her decision not to bring 10-month-old baby Archie along with her, instead leaving the royal tot in Canada under the care of the Sussexes nanny and Meghan’s close friend, Jessica Mulroney. According to the Sunday Times, Queen Elizabeth II — who has not been able to spend much time with her youngest great-grandchild and was last photographed with him last May when the couple debuted their newborn son to the world — was saddened by the decision.
