About Jan Lewis

Jan retired in 2009 in far North east Victoria, after working for 14 years as coordinator of Corryong Neighborhood House where she still volunteers. Her creative activities there include Top of the Murray Poets & Bush Storytellers and their writing group, Colours of Sound Singing Group, Social Dance Group, teaching Ukelele, Annual Women?s Weekends, and School Holiday Activities for children. Jan also entertains Seniors and community groups with her partner Linton Vogel on button accordion. Jan?s main volunteer role is coordinating Poetry and Bush Music Events at Corryong’s iconic Man from Snowy River Festival from 1997 – current. She is also Secretary of Victorian Bush Poetry & Music Association, representing Victoria on the Australian Bush Poets Association. Jan moved to the village of Walwa on the Murray River in 1988, where she volunteered for a number of community organisations and produced the local newsletter Walwa World for 10 years until 1997. Jan started writing rhyming poetry in 1977, and in 2000 received a Victorian Government Rural Women’s Leadership Bursary to link her writing with her Community Development work. She has produced ‘Beyond the Gate’ – a CD, and a book ?A Rural Woman’s Reflections? of her poems.
