My life just wouldn’t be the same without my little dog

Fran's adorable little dog, Scarlet Pearl.

When I first set eyes on her she was only eight weeks old. It was love at first sight for me. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. It took me a couple of weeks to make arrangements, then on a cool morning in late March I drove a couple of hours to pick her up from the plane.

I was so excited I had to try hard not to let my mind wander. I had been alone a few months and I was looking forward to having companionship again. The trip to the Launceston airport was uneventful but not as slow as it seemed and soon I was waiting patiently for the aircraft to arrive. Of course the plane was late! Isn’t  that always the case when you are waiting? Finally, it taxied down the runway.

I waited and waited – and waited. She was last off the plane and then had to be cleared, so I waited. Then a young man opened a door and beckoned me inside. She was being cleared before I could meet her so I waited some more. At first I didn’t realise it was men laughing but all too soon I saw three men hovering over her. They seemed to be laughing and talking to her as though they didn’t even know I was in the room. Suddenly a man with an official looking uniform came through the door and asked if I was waiting for her. When I acknowledged that I was, the other men looked at me and smiled. After she was cleared I was escorted back to my car with her. She was quiet but taking everything in. The men all agreed that they would be happy to look after her if I found she was too much for me.

We set off together for the journey back to my house, to her new home. She was quiet, and I was anxious. Once we arrived home and I took her from the car, she seemed to relax. I was showered with kisses. She was so loving and so small. I hoped she loved me as much as I loved her.

Three years have passed and I love her more each day. She is the love of my life; my salvation. She keeps me sane. She looks at me with such trust in her eyes and she never questions my reasons for doing anything. She is loyal and loving and fills my world with joy. Her name is Scarlet Pearl. She is a little black and white Cavoodle. I named her Scarlet because of the men at the airport. She had them all eating from her hand, just like Scarlet O’Hara. Pearl is my sister’s middle name and she helped me to make her part of my family so I thought it fitting. We do almost everything together and she always has time to listen to me. My world would be different without my little dog.

I am thankful every day that I have her.
