War widow steals a kiss from Prince Harry in Sydney

Daphne Dunne, 97, might just be the luckiest lady in Sydney today after snagging a kiss from none other than Prince Harry.

The war widow previously met Harry when he was in Australia in 2015 and was the talk of the town after the young royal bent down to give her a kiss on the cheek.

Today, she waited for hours in the rain hoping to catch Harry again as he made his way around the harbour and she certainly wasn’t disappointed.

As the prince made his way through the waiting well-wishers he caught a glimpse of Daphne and made a bee-line straight for her, planting another kiss on her cheek.

Despite the heavy rain and busy schedule, Harry held her hand and took a moment to have a chat with her, even moving her umbrella to make sure she wasn’t getting wet.

It was just one of the small acts of kindness he displayed throughout the day, making sure he stopped to say hello to as many royal fans as possible.

Harry is in Australia for the Invictus Games, which he founded after returning from two tours of duty with the British Army in Afghanistan.

Earlier, he gave a moving speech at Sydney’s Admiralty House where he spoke about the moment that inspired him to start the Games for wounded veterans.

“I’d been serving as an army officer in the British army until my presence on the front line leaked out into the press,” Harry explained.

“I could no longer stay with my soldiers as it would have put them at great risk. It was a decision over which I had no control, but the guilt of having to leave my guys behind was something I found hard to swallow, as anyone who has served will understand.

“It was that flight home from which put me on the path to create the Invictus Games.

“While we sat waiting to board, the coffin of a Danish soldier was loaded onto the plane, also on the flight were three young British soldiers in induced comas.

“All three were wrapped in plastic, some with missing limbs and tubes coming out of them everywhere.

“The sacrifices we ask our service men and women to make came home to me so powerfully in those moments.

“Four years later, I began to look for ways in which I could support those veterans who had returned with injuries that in previous years, simply would have been unsurvivable.”

The Invictus Games are now one of the world’s biggest and most successful competitive sporting events for wounded soldiers.

The Games will be held in Sydney in October 2018.
