Prince William, Duchess Catherine and Prince Harry showed at the weekend just why they’ve won the affection of Britain: they aren’t afraid to laugh at themselves.

The thoroughly modern royals were on hand to officially open the 2017 London Marathon yesterday, then to cheer runners along the gruelling 26.6 mile course.  Armed with a red beacon at the starting point of the race, a joking William couldn’t resist threatening to blast his laughing wife.

The royal pair later took spots at the 22-mile mark to hand out water to marathoners, high-fiving runners and happily posing for selfies. William even took it in good humour when he got splashed with water by one cheeky runner, although Catherine looked a little less impressed. Prince Harry, meanwhile, jokingly avoided the embrace of one particularly sweaty runner.

Prince Harry, with his brother and sister-in-law, were also at the marathon to support runners from Heads Together, a partnership the royals have with eight big mental health charities, in a big to tackle the stigma of mental health problems.

Prince Harry spoke this week about being close to a mental breakdown on many occasions after the death of his mother, Princess Diana, because he bottled up his emotions. Now, he said one of his main goals was to encourage people to talk about their mental health.

“I know there’s huge merit in talking about your issues and the only thing about keeping it quiet, it’s only ever going to make it worse — not just for you but everybody else around you as well — because you become a problem and I, through a lot of my 20s, was a problem and I didn’t know how to deal with it,” the prince said.
