Carrie Fisher’s daughter has paid an unusual and beautiful tribute to her late mother.

Billie Lourd made an unexpected appearance at the Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida, in a custom-made white Tom Ford dress with billowing sleeves that was inspired by one of Fisher’s famous costumes in the original hit movie.

“In our world, Star Wars became a religion and a way of life,” Lourd told the audience. “I wanted to be here with you because I know you feel the same way.”

The 24-year-old, who collaborated with Ford on the creation of the Princess Leia dress, said that her mother was imperfect in many ways “but her imperfections and willingness to speak about them are what made her more than perfect”.

“My mum, like Leia , wasn’t ever afraid to speak her mind and say things that might have made most people uncomfortable,” Lourd said, according to a People report, adding that Fisher openly fought her own “dark side”.

Fisher, who had been public about her battles with mental illness and addiction, died on December 27 after suffering a heart attack four days earlier. Her own mother, the actress Debbie Reynolds, died the following day, December 28, of a stroke.

Lourd appeared with her mother in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and is due to play the same role in the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars director George Lucas also paid tribute to Fisher at the event in Florida, saying that she could hold her own against anyone in Hollywood.

“She wore a dress through the whole thing, but she was the toughest one of the group,” he recalled.
