Eagles sues hotel for profits and damages

Welcome to the Hotel California.

It is a line from the classic Eagles song, but it is not an open invitation.

The US Rock band have filed a lawsuit against a hotel in Mexico accusing them of using their 1976 hit song without permission, reports the BBC.

The hotel involved is an 11-room accommodation in Todos Santos in Baja California Sur. It was initially named Hotel California when it opened in 1950 but has been through a number of changes.

The Eagles have alleged the hotel pipes Hotel California and some of their other songs through the sound system, as well as selling t-shirts using the word ‘legendary’ which causes confusion for guests who assume it relates to the song. In fact, many comments on sites like Trip Advisor incorrectly state that it was the place the song was written.

“Defendants lead US consumers to believe that the Todos Santos Hotel is associated with the Eagles and, among other things, served as the inspiration for the lyrics in Hotel California, which is false,” the complaint said. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles federal court, seeks a variety of damages, profits and a halt to any infringement.
