The grumpiest reviews of famous travel attractions

Jun 05, 2017

They’re heralded as some of the must-visit places in the world – monumental triumphs of human history. But, some travellers aren’t having a bar of these famous attractions. You won’t believe some of the reviews some grumpy travellers have left on Tripadvisor – take a look for yourself.

1. Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy

Pisa review

“It just looks silly. Imagine a magician with one trick. Or a TV with only one channel. If you find this exciting and worth a trip, then go see the poorly built Leaning Tower of Pisa. As you turn the corner to enter the plaza there it is. And that’s pretty much all there is.”

“Looks like it was put up by Disney 6 weeks ago… clean, clinical and smaller than you think! Once you’ve seen it, that’s it… it loses its draw very quickly.”

2. Chichen Itza, Mexico

Chichen Itza review

“Fake! Looks so new and fake. Don’t spend more than a few hours there.”

“Terrible. Long bus ride, lots of annoying street vendors, not very interesting.”

“Too hot. We paid a fair bit of money to go on this trip and it was a waste of money. I couldn’t wait to get back to the hotel. I consider myself a cultured person that has travelled widely but I was bored most of the day and could not wait to get back to the hotel. Perhaps it was because I was part of a tour where we had to spent what felt like 3 torturous hours at Chichen Itza. Man it felt like 10 hours…”

3. The Great Sphinx of Giza, Egypt

Sphinx review

“Been there, done that, have the t-shirt and bragging rights. Smaller than I imagined. Expected an impressive statue and got this. Best part of the tour was learning that Bonaparte was responsible for the missing nose.”

“Crowded and nothing special. Like the Sphinx, didn’t like the crowd. Nothing special to see besides the statue of the Sphinx. Hot, dusty and just plain old funny.”

4. The Colosseum, Italy

Colosseum review

“Not much to see. It’s a nice building but they could do so much more to make it interactive.”

“An ants nest. A swarming, writing ants nest is by best description. It was a hot day and had to wait a good hour to get in, not even peak season.”

5. The Great Wall of China, China

Great Wall of China review

“There was too many people. There was fog everywhere. I thought that it was a big hassle and did not like the stuff there. It was very pretty though.”

“It’s long but so is the M6, and that goes for miles. At least you can drive on that and it does the job. It’s not a great wall, it’s an alright wall. It’s the Alright Wall of China.”

“If bricks are your thing, you may or may not enjoy this. I didn’t. If bricks and walls are not your thing, best avoid if you can, it’s too big.”

6. Eiffel Tower, France

Eiffel Tower review

“Just a big chunk of metal… overrated. Do yourself a favour and just buy a postcard of the place lit up in the evening.”

“It was just a big hunk of metal and throughout the whole tour I was hoping it would fall and kill me so that the tour could end.”

“Its a big pile of steel in the middle of Paris. Naked skeleton of what looks like a pyramid but is not. I really did not know what the big deal was with this thing. Worst thing is you can’t escape its sight anywhere in the already disgusting city. I recommend this to pompous saps who think they are somehow cultured when they stare at a pile of metal while eating a croissant.”

7. Stonehenge, England

Stonehenge review

“Dated. It’s a bit run down and looks very dated now. Could do with a good clean and some fresh paint – sadly past its best.”

“Overrated bunch of rocks. They’re just a bunch of rocks. You can see them from the main road and it isn’t worth the money to do an audio tour – there’s only so much they can tell you about a site they know so little about. Probably the most overrated tourist attraction in the UK.”

8. Sydney Opera House, Australia

Sydney Opera House Review

“Just not awesome at all. Just to be clear, we didn’t go inside of it but I must admit to being more than disappointed when we saw it from Circular Quay. Even on the river cruises and from the Bridge, it just isn’t what it is made out to be in my opinion.”

“Like an average oil painting. Whoever decided teeny, tiny white tiles was a good choice of building material should be locked away. Overall the appearance was simply dirty, dated and simply displeasing.”

“Nothing special, looks better on TV.”
