When a blue-eyed homeless woman who spoke English was found on the streets of Rome, people wondered whether it could have been missing British girl Madeleine McCann.

But a Swedish man has since come forward to reveal that the girl is his missing 21-year-old daughter.

Several media outlets shared the image of the woman wearing a rain coat and long skirt, with some outlets speculating that it could have been British girl Madeleine McCann, the three-year-old girl who disappeared in Portugal during a family vacation.

But Madeleine would have only been 12 years old, and the Italian police confirmed that the homeless woman appeared to be in her 20s.

A Swedish man claiming to be the girl’s father has come forward to say how difficult it has been to see that his missing daughter is homeless on the streets of Rome.

“I wish that she wants to come home now, but that’s not at all certain,” Tahvo Jauhojärvi told the Expressen.

“It’s important that it gets out that this is a Swedish girl, and not pretend that it’s that other girl, Madeleine. It only gives them false hope.”

The Swedish girl, who has Aspergers and left Sweden to study Italian, had not been in touch with her family for six months.

“She had been missing for six months at least now. I knew she went to Italy to study the Italian language several months ago,” her father told The Sun.

“She stopped contacting everyone, any family, she just wanted to break away and start her own life because she has Asperger’s as well.

“I have contacted the Swedish police and they have contacted Interpol and they have contacted the Swedish embassy in Rome so I can get her home – and I hope she’ll want to go home.”

Head of the Scotland Yard’s homicide squad, Detective Chief Superintendent Mick Duthie still holds hope that Maddie will be found, as the case to find her is still ongoing.
