How to get a free luggage trolley at the airport

Over-packing seems like a good idea at the time, but just wait until you have to lug those big suitcases through the airport terminal. Sure, most suitcases have wheels and ergonomic handles, all the bells and whistles a traveller could possibly need, but having two cases, a handbag, a camera and your duty free shopping can be an absolute nightmare to walk around the airport with.

You might think that it’s easy enough to grab yourself a luggage trolley to cart around the place for you but, unfortunately, many airports actually charge for them. And while, yes, it is worth spend a bit of extra change to be able to comfortably make your way around the airport with your bags, there is a way you can get out of paying for one at all.

Instead of heading straight for the line-up of luggage trolleys at the airport terminal, get someone to stay with the bags while you make your way out into the carpark. You’d be amazed at how many people leave their trolleys lefts in the parking lot outside, or even just at the rank outside the front of the terminal.

Before one of the airport staff members go outside to collect them all, make your way outside and see if you can find a trolley that has been discarded before anyone else gets to it.

“Avoid paying $4 for a luggage cart in baggage claim by going outside to the pickup area,” says one travellers on social media.

“There are usually a few outside at the curb that people abandon when they get picked up.”
