Helpful travel tips for glasses and contact wearers

Jun 05, 2017

The excitement is building up, the suitcase is ready to go and you’re about the board the plane, but if you don’t take care of your eyes while you’re away you might not actually be able to see much while on holiday at all. Travellers who wear glasses and contacts have a few more things to think about than other travellers, but it doesn’t have to be difficult especially with these simple tips.

1. Bring your glasses case

The best way to keep your glasses safe while you’re not wearing them is to pop them into their case and the same goes while on holiday. Don’t pop them into your bag or leave them on the bathroom counter without the case either. This just increases the risk of them getting scratched or broken and then there will be a real dint in your holiday plans.

2. Don’t forget your cleaning cloth

It’s one of the simplest ways to maintain your glasses: cleaning them. It’s a great idea to clean your glasses at least once a day so your eyes don’t have to strain through all the gunk and dust that builds up. And that way you can see the views and scenery on holiday a lot clearer.

3. Bring an extra pair

Things don’t always go to plan on holiday, so it’s worth preparing for things to go a little haywire. If you have a spare pair of glasses, be sure to bring them along with you on holiday. That way if you do scratch, break or lose your specs, you always have another pair at the ready.

4. Keep your glasses in your carry-on

If you don’t need to wear your glasses all the time and usually just need them for driving and some reading, then it’s worth remember that fragile items are best kept in your carry-on, including your glasses. That way there’s no way they’ll get knocked around and you can keep a good eye on them, so to speak.

5. Pack sanitiser

Contact wearers, this one is for you. There are going to be times that you desperately want to take your contacts out after a long day and aren’t able to find a bathroom with a tap and some soap. For emergencies, it’s a great idea to have some hand sanitiser in your bag.

6. Pack eye drops

Another one for the lens lovers, don’t leave home without a bottle of eye drops. They are going to be an absolute godsend during your holiday. Got some dust in your eye? Eye drops. A bit of irritation? Eye drops. Caught in a dust storm? Eye drops!

7. Wear your glasses while flying

You might be tempted to get on a flight dressed up and ready to go for your holiday in your best clothes, makeup and contacts, but trust us on this one, if you’re a contact lens wearer you are not going to want to wear your glasses on a flight. Not only is the cabin air dry and likely to make your contacts irritate your eyes, but you might just want to have a bit of a sleep and that’s a big no-no with contacts.
