Jun 05, 2017

You’d think the white sands of the Gold Coast or the harbour in Sydney would be a drawcard for Australian holiday makers, but according to a recent study another metropolis has taken the gong as Australia’s most popular city for Australian holiday-makers.

According to Roy Morgan Research, who investigated which Australian city was the most popular for Aussies holidaying at home, the city of Melbourne has the most appeal.

“Melbourne’s continued ascendance is testament to the city’s cross-generational appeal,” says Norman Morris, Industry Communications Director from Roy Morgan Research.

Shopping

Australia's favourite holiday destination revealed - Melbourne

If you love a bit of retail therapy, then you can’t go past Melbourne’s CBD. There’s the Bourke Street Mall for your big retailers, Emporium for the international brands and fashion houses and The Strand if you want to combine your shopping addiction with your love of food.

Food

Melbourne

Whether it’s classic Italian and a strong cup of coffee or a trendy street food and contemporary Pan-Asian fare, Melbourne is a melting pot of culinary delights. Lygon street is where to go for Italian, Chapel Street if you want to take your pick from almost 1,000 shops, restaurants and bars, or the CBD where you can visit Brunswick Street, China Town or wander down the dark alleyways that are synonymous with this city.

Sport

Melbourne

Melbourne is known as one of the sporting capitals of Australia and for good reason, the city hosts everything from the Australian Open and the AFL Grand Final to cricket and basketball tournaments. Melbourne has been voted the Top Sports Events City and the SportBusiness Ultimate Sport City Award in 2016.

Art

Melbourne

The city of Melbourne has more than 100 galleries, ranging from small privately-owned galleries to large public establishments. Whether you want to see an international collection at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art or a small show of photographic works by a local, the city of Melbourne has that and so much more on offer. The art doesn’t simply lie behind the walls of a gallery either, art can be seen sprawled throughout the streets of inner-city lanes.
