‘Not the sharpest tool in the shed’: Gran of Eugenie’s fiancé issues brutal burn

The pair announced their engagement this week.

Most grandparents would be hard pressed to find something at fault with their grandchildren, but not Joanna Newton. Newton, whose grandson Jack Brooksbank became engaged to Princess Eugenie this week, told the MailOnline that her grandson is “a charming boy” but “not the most intelligent”.

Newton, 91, gave the British publication a hilarious interview in which she aired her disbelief that Jack had managed to bag a royal and said it says “a lot about Eugenie that it’s him she wants.”

“I just never thought it would go this far her being a member of the Royal family,” she said. “I would call him ordinary, I wouldn’t say there is anything special about him, he’s a good-looking, nice chap and I think it says a lot about Eugenie that it’s him she wants and it’s lovely.”

While it sounds a little harsh, Granny Newton added that she’s extremely happy for the couple and can’t wait to see them tie the knot. Fans of the Royal family were overjoyed when it was announced there would be not one, but two royal weddings this year.

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson announced Jack and Eugenie’s engagement on Monday, saying they were delighted for the pair. The couple will say their vows at St George’s Chapel in Windsor — the same chapel were Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry in May.

Brooksbank proposed to Eugenie while on a trip to Nicaragua earlier this month. An official announcement from the Palace revealed the pair would marry in the British Autumn, with a mid-October wedding the most likely.

Prince Andrew noted shortly after the engagement announcement that “everyone was looking at their diaries” to find the perfect date. The couple had reportedly wanted to marry in September, but had to reschedule because of clashes with the Royal calendar.

The Queen and Prince Phillip traditionally spend September in Scotland and Prince Harry is already committed to the Invictus Games, which begin on October 20 this year.

Princess Eugenie has been gushing over her intended since the announcement of her engagement, telling the BBC’s The One Show that the proposal from her boyfriend of seven years was a “perfect moment”.

She told presenters: “The lake was so beautiful. The light was just a special light I had never seen. I actually said this is an incredible moment, and then he popped the question, which was really surprising even though we have been together seven years,” she said. “I was over the moon … We couldn’t be happier.”

Eugenie met her fiancé on a skiing trip in Switzerland. He is currently an ambassador for a tequila brand and in the past was a manager for popular nightspot, Mahiki.
