Michelle Payne is ready to race

She’s back!

That’s right, your favourite female jockey is booked to ride in her first race this weekend since a devastating injury almost ended her career.

And it could signal a comeback for the Melbourne-cup winner.

Michelle Payne will ride in a race at Sale in Victoria on Sunday on a horse called Lucky Liberty.

As if the horse’s name wasn’t lucky enough, it turns out Michelle riding the horse all comes down to chance.

Trainer Henry Dwyer told the Sydney Morning Herald it all started after he called the jockey about a problem with a fence between his property and the Payne’s property.

“It all came about really with just one call. I had to talk about this problem with the fence between our adjacent properties and then we started to talk about racing,” he said.

“Then I asked her how she was and how her weight was and she said she was at 54 kilograms and feeling good, so I thought, ‘You may as well ride Lucky Liberty as I need a rider for the horse on Sunday.”

But wait there’s more!

Lucky Liberty has won three of five starts, all with Michelle Payne on board!

“Look, Michelle sounded good. She’s obviously worked hard to get back to her fitness again, so good luck to her,” Dwyer said.

If Michelle rides Lucky Liberty on Sunday, it’ll be her first race since she fell of one of her trainer-brother’s horses at a race in Mildura and tore her pancreas.

For the past three months there’s been speculation the jockey may never ride again.

She also lost her chance at a repeat Melbourne Cup win on Prince of Penzance, who is also returning to the track this weekend at Flemington in the Makybe Diva stakes.

Could it be the start of another fairytale Melbourne Cup win for Michelle Payne?

The jockey has refused to comment on her return.

Looks like you’ll have to wait until Sunday to see!

Do you think Michelle Payne will ride in the Melbourne Cup this year? What words of encouragement would you give her?
