Tom Hanks has jumped to his wife Rita Wilson’s defence as a swarming group of fans got too close, causing her to trip.

Hanks yelled at the fans to “back the fuck off” his wife, ushering them to back away from Wilson as she escaped to the car.

The out-of-character moment occurred as the couple, both aged 65, were departing a New York City restaurant, Hanks and Wilson are seen smiling and greeting the fans as they walk through the crowd, with Hanks graciously navigating the fans invading his space.

Hanks jumped into protection mode as a man in sunglasses and a cap appeared to knock Wilson from behind as he focused on getting an autograph from the Oscar winner, causing her to shriek and stumble, shouting “stop it”.

“That is my wife. Back the f**k off,” Hanks yelled.

The Cast Away actor looked visibly upset as he stared down the crowd, eventually yelling “knocking over my wife” at the onlookers.

The man who caused the incident turned to blame the crowd around him as fans appeared shocked at Hanks’ explosion.

“What are ya’ll doing? Yeah, they’re buggin’. Sorry Tom, sorry about that,” he says, apologising for the crowd’s behaviour.

Fans of the actor jumped to his defence on Twitter, saying Hanks was justified in looking out for his wife.

It’s the second time this week Hanks has been in the news, after a clip of the actor speaking at an event for his upcoming flick Elvis showed him visibly shaking, sparking concerns for his health.
