This decadent dessert comes with a twist that makes it healthier than a traditional mousse … Avocado.

By using avocado to make this recipe, the texture is rich and creamy without the cream, eggs and sugar of the traditional.  You can’t taste the avocado, but what you can’t taste is the deliciousness of this treat that won’t have you overindulging.

Not only will it taste like your regular chocolate mousse, it’s possible that it will taste better. It’s pretty darn good… Even if I do say so myself!

Serves 4.

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 3 pitted dates
  • 30g semi-sweet chocolate
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup non-dairy milk, coconut, almond, etc.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1-2 tbsp maple syrup, honey or agave (optional for sweetness)

Method

  1. Peel the avocados and remove the pits. Place in a food processor. Remove the pits from the dates and place in the food processor. Pulse to break them apart and start to blend.
  2. Place chocolate in a microwave safe bowl and heat at 50 per cent power in 30-second increments until it is melted and smooth.
  3. Add chocolate and other ingredients to the food processor and blend for 1 minute. Scrape down the sides and repeat twice more for approximately 3 minutes in total. You want it to be silky and smooth.
  4. Serve as is or chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Store in the refrigerator for up to three days.
