Most folks aren’t aware that Coonawarra’s first great red was actually shiraz. The region’s cab sav gets the spotlight these days, but there is some awesome shiraz still being made there. This is a perfect example of one. It’s deep and rich with a fragrant nose. There’s blueberries, cherries, blackberries, chocolate and even bay leaf all intertwined and held together with cedary notes from a bit of time in toasted oak. The red earth of Coonawarra is evident in the wine by way of a bit of chalky texture and dusty tannins. Definitely an homage to Coonawarra’s past, and some great drinking now and for the next decade or two.
