Mother’s Day, birthdays and other holidays are great to celebrate, but they can be extremely difficult for people who have lost someone dear to them.

For Australian actress Magda Szubanski, Sunday marked her first Mother’s Day without her beloved mum. As you may recall, Magda’s mother Margaret passed away last September after growing frail with advanced dementia.

The Kath and Kim star took to Instagram over the weekend with a touching tribute to Margaret.

“Miss you Ma. It’s a weird sad day, not having you here,” she wrote. “The matriarch holding us all together in your gentle hands. But it’s still a beautiful day – bright and clear and crisp. The sort of day you loved.”

While hard, the Babe actress said she was coping well considering.

“I’m happy today,” she continued. “Feeling the love from friends and family. Big hugs to all those who are missing their mamas on this day. We are the elders now.

“Whether we have kids or not – we hold hearts in our hands. Our job is the care of souls. And we are blessed to have this task.”

The 57-year-old added that her sister and two nieces were also in her thoughts on the difficult day. She also included a photograph of her mother with her tribute.

Fans were quick to offer their support to the Fast Forward actress, with many relating exactly to what Magda was going through.

One person wrote: “So beautifully said. Missing my dear mum Val today”.

Another comment read: “Your mum is gorgeous Magda and you look a lot like her. I love her wrinkles the most, filled with wisdom, strength and love. Thinking of you”.

A third added: “Lost my Mum 30 years ago just on mother’s day. I was 26. I have held her close. She was brave and strong and my sadness is that she did not see her strapping 6ft 7in grandson and 4 great grandsons who have come along. She would have been in bliss surrounded by her gentlemen”.

Last year, the TV icon had been keeping friends, family and fans up to date with Margaret’s health condition. In one emotional Instagram post, she explained how she was slowly losing the mother she’d known her entire life to Dementia.

“Her voice has faded to less than a whisper. Her thoughts often an incoherent jumble of past and present, real and imagined,” she wrote last August. “Now even her sense of humour is fading. I think maybe that is the thing I find hardest to bear. What Bette Davis said is so true – ‘old age ain’t no place for sissies’.”

Margaret passed away at the age of 92.
