Aussies may know the CSIRO better for its groundbreaking research, but the country’s top scientific agency is having surprise success in an unexpected field: helping Australians lose weight.

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, which we all know fondly by its acronym, says its new Total Wellbeing Diet is one of the 10 finest innovations it has come up with in the past 100 years – and that’s saying something, given that the CSIRO is responsible for developing some amazing consumer products, from Aerogard to key parts of wi-fi technology.

In simple terms, the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet is a high protein, low glycemic index (GI) eating plan that’s scientifically formulated for weight loss.

As far back as 2005, CSIRO researchers found that eating a combination of protein-rich foods and low-GI carbohydrates at all meals was the most effective way to not only lose weight but to keep it off long-term. That flips the way most Aussies currently eat, with most of their protein eating as part of their main meal at night and much smaller amounts at breakfast and lunch.

The CSIRO researchers did a series of big studies that showed overweight people were better able to manage their weight when they ate a high protein diet rather than a high carbohydrate diet. Distributing protein across all meals resulted in better appetite control, a faster metabolism and reducing cravings.

The Total Wellbeing Diet was first published as a best-selling book 13 years ago, and now has been made into a comprehensive online weight management program that is designed to run over 12 weeks.

What makes it different from many other diets and plans on the market is that it is personalised for each dieter – the CSIRO says the diet is tailored to a users’ ‘diet personality type’ – and the healthy eating plan is accompanied by online tools such as a community forum and daily reminders to keep participants on track.

So far, more than 500,000 Australians have lost weight with the Total Wellbeing Diet, with the average dieter losing 5.5 per cent of their body weight.

As an extra bit of motivation, the CSRIO is currently offering a full refund of the $199 Total Wellbeing Diet cost to dieters who meet specific criteria during their weight loss journey.

To receive the full refund, members must record their weight in an online diary at least once a week for 12 consecutive weeks, within the week of a scheduled weigh-in. A photograph of the progress made needs to be uploaded each week of the program, while a net weight loss needs to be achieved over the 12 weeks.

In addition, there’s a survey that needs to be completed at the end, and CSRIO also asks successful dieters if it can use their story to inspire others.

For anyone who needs an added kickstart, the Starts at 60.Club has a great 20 per cent-off offer on the 12-week program, which includes full online access to the scientifically formulated CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet and the new Protein Balance menu plan.

The price for club members is just $159, which includes 12 weeks’ worth of meal plans, a protein balance menu plan, the Total Wellbeing Diet app, access to thousands of delicious, healthy recipes and meal ideals, exercise plans, tracking tools, shopping lists, access to a Total Wellbeing Diet online community group, as well as an option to sync your Fitbit or Garmin to the website.
