AFL star Jesse Hogan reveals cancer diagnosis

Jesse Hogan scores for the Demons.

AFL star Jesse Hogan has revealed he will undergo treatment after being diagnosed with testicular cancer just three weeks after his father passed away from the disease.

The Demons’ forward, 22, will take indefinite leave from the game while he recovers, but his Melbourne club says he is expected to make a full recovery and return for the rest of the season.

“Jesse underwent an ultrasound late last week which revealed a small mass in his testicle suggestive of a seminoma, which is a type of cancer,” a statement from the Demons said.

“Jesse has also undergone a CT scan which determined the cancer has not spread to any other part of his body.”

General manager of football Josh Mahoney said, “The club’s collective heart is with Jesse Hogan. This is clearly a very difficult time for Jesse and his health and wellbeing is the number one priority for us.

“We informed the players of this on Friday and respected Jesse’s wishes to keep this information private up until this point.

“Jesse will obviously miss a period of football due to this surgery but we expect him to make a full recovery and return to AFL in the short-term future.”

Hogan has been a star player since joining the Demons in 2013, rarely putting a foot wrong.

He recently missed a game after his father Tony passed away from cancer.

Testicular cancer is not very common, but is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer after skin cancer in men aged 18 to 39, according to the Cancer Council of NSW.
