What pisses me off: The Government

Apr 24, 2017

I’m sure politicians were once a lot more clever and honest than they seem to be today, and in those days we always felt they at least had our welfare at heart, even if they couldn’t put everything right for everyone.

But look at the situation now! We, the people of Australia seem to come a long way down any welfare lists the Government might have, while they pander to all sorts of minorities, frightened to death of offending any of them! The situation really is getting too bad now, and something needs to be done urgently if this wonderful country of ours is to survive and to remain as ours. I have a list, by no means complete but it’s the best I can dream up, of what I believe the Government needs to do to win back our respect and our trust – and it’s a list which applies to BOTH major parties!

  1. This is something Australia needs, in order to grow, but the immigrants we want need to be legal ones, who have gone through correct channels and earned the right to come here. Illegals are merely queue-jumpers and should be given short shrift, more or less as is happening now.
  2. I’m not a religious person, but I believe everyone should have the right to follow their own beliefs, but under certain conditions and restrictions. Follow your religion as you desire, but remember, all rules regarding your beliefs are SECONDARY to the laws of Australia, and the religious rules carry no weight at law at all!
  3. Those with specific beliefs, whether Australian born or immigrants, should not expect us to stop celebrating Easter, Christmas and many other activities and traditional events, in order to avoid offending them. No offence is meant, and none should be taken, immigrants by definition have come to this country, I would imagine, in order to find a better life than they experienced in their home countries, and part of that is accepting the customs of Australia, without question. And this also applies to those Australian-born people with specific beliefs; though they should be permitted to live the way their conscience requires, they must allow others to live as they wish too! One of the major changes Government needs in their decision making, is to look after the majority of the population – they seem unable to realise that we are offended by what they are doing at present, at least as much as the minority groups who are getting their own way at present!
  4. Much of the money the Government sends overseas at the moment goes to countries which are at least as wealthy as Australia, countries which are openly hostile to us and our way of life and, above all goes into the pockets of a few very rich individuals caring only for themselves rather than the welfare of their people. That money could be much better used, staying in Australia and assisting in the people here, who really need help – the elderly, the sick, the incompetent and the people who have to rely on outside forces, such as the weather to succeed, as our farmers.
  5. The Government needs to start treating politicians more in line with the way they treat the rest of us! While I believe we need to pay them well in order to expect them to run the place properly, nonetheless most of the perks they now receive should be cancelled, free flights for life, pensions paid as soon as they leave Government, no matter what their age, expenses covering virtually everything they do, and many other things too numerous to mention here.
  6. Finally, (because space restriction mean I have to stop very soon), I believe we should do away with the second level of Government altogether. With three levels, pretty well everything that happens, becomes too cumbersome, and after a considerable argument about everything. Federal Government should run nationally, education, health, defence and international arrangements, while new ‘super-councils’ would be responsible for roads and other infrastructure, planning, housing and such things as tourism, etc.

I’m sure I have omitted many other Governmental responsibilities, which should be allocated better, and I am sure there are many other things Government could do to arrive at a proper balance in the way the country is run, bearing in mind something they seem to have forgotten completely – in a democracy what the majority decides is the way things are run, with no pandering to minorities!

It’s a change I suppose I shall never see in my lifetime, but I fear things won’t be truly right until something along these lines is done.

Do you agree with Brian?  What are your views on the Government both State and Federal?
