US Vice President arrives in Australia, but it’s not all business

Mike Pence has arrived in Australia

Mike Pence, the US Vice President, has arrived in Australia for his first official visit.

Pence, who arrived with his family last night, was greeted at the airport by Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet, Australian ambassador to the US Joe Hockey, acting US ambassador to Australia James Carouso and consul-general Valerie Fowler.

Due to meet with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and other government officials today it expected they will be talking trade, North Korea and the war in Syria, while emphasizing a commitment of the US to its alliances and partnerships.

His visit has created a major security operation including road closures, mounted police and motorcades granted secure road conditions.

Part of the visit will include sightseeing, with a harbor cruise expected as part of the itinerary.

Pence and family, wife Karen and daughters Charlotte and Audrey are on a 10 day Asia-Pacific tour.

Already visiting South Korea, Japan and Indonesia, they will leave Australian for Hawaii on Monday.
