How to shop for a winter coat and save money

Update your wardrobe without wasting your money.

Now the temperatures have started to drop it has turned our attention to our winter wardrobes. Winter fashions are already in the stores so now is the time to venture out and update those key pieces. If a winter coat is on your shopping list here is the advice of fashion stylist Alarna Hope to make sure you buy the right one for you, and not waste your money of something that won’t fulfil your needs.

Consider your climate

If you live in a climate that only sees a few days of really cold winter weather there is no point buying a big heavy coat, no matter how stylish it looks. You can always layer up on the colder days. On the flip side, if you are guaranteed to be bracing yourself for arctic winds for months a medium weight coat isn’t going to cut it. Those big heavy coats are going to be what you will need.

Cost per wear

Are you looking at a coat you will only wear on a random cold snap day? If the price is in the upper range of what you would spend, you are not going to get your money’s worth. It is far better to spend the cash on something you will wear a lot.

Fabric quality

The price tag is not an indication of the quality of the garment. Look instead at the fabric list on the tag. Wool is a surefire winner. Look also to see if the garment has canvas or fused interfacing. Fused is a cheaper alternative but it not going to last long term.

Winter proof

Check the lining of the coat to ensure is it thick enough to do the job. Feel between the lining and the external fabric to see if there is any wadding or insulation.

Check for fit

When buying a coat remember it is going to be worn over top of other clothing, so you need to be sure you have enough room. You want to be able to button it up and have it not pull across your bust or stomach. If you start seeing an ‘X’ shape forming where the button closes, you’ll know it’s a touch too tight. The shoulder seam should sit right on the edge of your shoulder, not hang over the edge or be sitting closer to your neck. If the area where the shoulder meets the arm sits flat and doesn’t make your upper arm bulge, you’ve found the right one.

Remember your style

We can’t help it if we fall in love with something in a store and have to have it, but think carefully. There is sure to be plenty of things you will love. Before you line up at the register think about your wardrobe at home and the colours in it. You don’t want a statement coat that goes with nothing else and feels like a one trick pony. Save yourself some money and invest in a coat that makes you feel fabulous and keeps you warm while you strut your stuff.
