Tasmanians and lucky Victorians have been treated to some breathtaking Christmas lights, as the Aurora Australis put on its best performance in recent times. Last night’s reappearance of these lesser-known Southern Lights are said to be “some of the best aurora viewings that we’ve had in Australia for many years”.
As the Australian Space Forecast Centre predicted last year, “we’re now emerging from a period of solar maximum that began in 2011, and historical data shows that some of the best auroras have occurred… (during) faster solar wind and intense geomagnetic activity”.
