The pension: Entitlement or not? 651

Yesterday, Bob sen this email to Starts at 60 and we thought it was important that we all read it and shared our thoughts on the matter. It lies in one big question – “Is the pension an entitlement or not?”

Have a read of the below letter and tell us, what do you think? Please remember that Starts at 60 has not written this we are only re-publishing it to create discussion on the matter.

Email Titled: The Pension is not an entitlement!
The only way things will change is when this kind of email translates into voting results at the polls — as of NOW — PENSIONERS outnumber ANY OTHER type of voter even by race – religion – or age.
WHEN ARE PENSIONERS going to wake up and understand, WE have the power to shape legislation all WE need is the will power to do so–
‘Entitlement’ my arse, I paid good money for my Pension and other benefits. Just because they borrowed that money, doesn’t make my benefits some kind of charity or hand-out. Gold plated MP pensions and Civil Service Government benefits, aka free healthcare, outrageous retirement packages,  67 paid holidays, 20 weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid sick days, now that’s welfare, and they have    the nerve to call me a ‘greedy pensioner’ and my retirement, an ‘entitlement’…  scroll down …..
What the HELL is wrong with us?
WAKE UP Australia !
Someone please tell me what the HELL is wrong with all the people that run this country?
We’re “broke” & can’t help our own Pensioners, Veterans, Orphans, Homeless etc., but spent 1.2 billion $$$’s for G-20 events!
In the last few months we have provided aid to India, Greece and Turkey.  And now Afghanistan, Pakistan… home of bin Laden. Literally, BILLIONS of Dollars Our retirees living on a ‘fixed income’, receive no aid nor do they get any breaks while our government and religious organisations pour Hundreds of Billions of $$$$’s and tons of food to foreign countries.
They call Old Age Security and Healthcare an entitlement even though most of us have been paying for it all our working lives, and now when it’s time for us to collect, the government is running out of money. Why did the government borrow from it in the first place?
We have hundreds of adoptable children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans.
AUSTRALIA: a country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed hungry, hospitals being closed, average income families who can’t afford dental care, elderly going without ‘needed’ meds and having to travel hundreds of miles for medical care with no reimbursement of cost, vehicles we can’t afford fuel for, lack of affordable housing, and mentally ill without treatment – etc., etc.
They have a ‘benefit’ for the people of foreign countries…ships and planes lining up with food, water, tents, clothes, bedding, doctors, and medical supplies.
Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT* gave ‘US’ the same support they give to other countries.
Tell us, is pension an entitlement?

  1. He does make a point. I feel if you have worked all your life and paid taxes then yes you are entitled to a pension.

  2. Those that have paid taxes during their working lives are entitled to have a pension.
The Gov has cleverly clouded the issue of mismanaged revenue received from workers to punishing those that have already paid their way to cover up this mismanagement.

    • They have lied about so much, I doubt many will believe them reminds me of the story we all read as children..The Little boy who called wolf and he called it so many times no one believed him when the wolf came and it ate him

    • the wolf is that story is us Pensioners and we may be old but we still vote and can toss them out

  3. Yes I agree, we in our seventies were assured of a pension, it has been devalued year by year, it started as 2/3 of the adult male basic wage, and you could earn a fair bit before it was affected, now you can earn hardly anything, and it would be about 1/3 of the basic wage.

    • To be fair, you can earn up to $6500 a year, and a couple can earn up to $13000, which is a great help. Of course, finding a source of income is not easy, but dog walking and pet minding are a couple of suggestions.

      • I take it you dog walk alot then, because even doing that would not cover the money needed to even get one up to the level of the POVERTY Line, let alone anywhere near a basis wage- which years of taxes should had accrued…..

  4. It’s the same in NZ

    • True…..
Try the ‘Living Alone’ pension in NZ – you can’t live alone on it !!
Apart from food – you have exactly the same expenses as couples with only just over half the amount!

  5. I SO AGREE…most of us have worked hard all our lives, and yet, we dont benefit from that…a politician can be in office for a short while, and gets the outrageous pension because…’he served our country’…what a laugh…if every politician had to live on the pension for 3 months, with no other income, and pay what we have to pay, bet the pension would change quick smart…

  6. No it is not an “entitlement” which implies unearned income. There is a legal obligation made many, many years ago by the Government to the people they represent (not rule) to that effect..
And I definitely agree with everything you wrote.
For the first time, we have the numbers in the eloctrate to force changes to be made, we just need to be focused and united. UNITED. Politicians should remember they are OUR servants. And disposable, as Abbott will discover.

    • I totally agree with this post, as the majority of us do, I’m sure. There is no doubt that the leadership of government will change at the next election. Doesn’t the law state that if you take money from anyone, you must pay it back. Isn’t the age pension payback for the money we seniors had to give to the government in taxes ???

  7. Certainly when I was growing up we were told you go to work and pay your taxes, which then entitles you to an old age pension. Seems to me now that a hell of a lot of welfare recipients have never contributed a cent to the government coffers, while those of us who have worked hard all our lives and paid our taxes are treated like we are the burden on society.

    • we only have one choice if we want to keep our heads above vote this Liberal Government out

    • Sadly when these people are given the dole when they should be assisted with paid jobs and careers it is difficult for them to contribute to pensions and superannuation. When the Liberal Governments destory our industries, let housing stocks fall, and destory opportunities for full time careers and employment. As the incresing number of welfare recipientsare a direct oresult of poor Government policies and actions it seems cruel to blame those placed in this position by our ever declining economy. I remember when also and I remember the job and career opportunities that were available then. We had a choice of work. Liberals do not care about people and have destroyed the basic structure of Australian society. There should be no dole but ongoing employment for all at a living wage. Government help should be transitional only until further employment is offered, but it must be available and offered.Yes we worked, we had a job or career today’s generation must be given the same opportunity. I had free education and a choice of careers on completion of studies. What job prospects do today’s graduates have when science is discouraged and industries dismantled??

    • A bit rough blaming the Libs Laurie – pollies of all labels have had a hand in the demise of the age pension!

    • I am currently receiving help from the Govt after being made redundant but I worked for over 40 years before that event so don’t feel bad that am receiving help and have contributed to society in helping as a volunteer at a school where a wee boy with autism received 18 hrs of paid time so his schooling was definitely helped by my being there several volunteer hours a week! We are not all bludgers I assure you.

    • Paying taxes does not entitle you/us to a pension. The govt many moons/decades ago, ceased this fund. it is a safety net and anyone in need should be entitled…but…many aren’t ! From one who worked in the system! I remember a millionaire property owner constantly lodging Age Pension claim forms yrs ago, knowing that he had no entitlement…???? Plus…he didn’t need the take taxpayers money!

      • Frazer turned $470 million million over to internal revenue. Hawke deleted all trace of the act, but see if you can find the repeal of the 7.5% levy. It’s still being paid.
The more I get to learn about who Ivote for the more I feel like & am aiding & abetting felons

    • Stewart Mulligan..wake up and smell the roses , this is Liberal Government policy.. no one else has attempted to touch the pensioners. John Howard was to smart he knew he would be voted out but this Abbott Government is arrogant

    • I work as a lollypop lady to supliment my age pension I only work 1 hr per day and that goes towards buying my food and feeding my dog and cat..but I am still paying off my house how I wish I don’t have to stand in the freezing cold and rain and boiling hot sun to make sure some snotty kid get from one side to the other safely hardly a merry Christmas either..

    • what it really needs is for a few buses to roll up at parliament house and all the aged pensioners go inside and protest.. our aged pension should be more than what we get now..

    • When will ppl stop blaming others and get off their backsides and start creating their own prosperity….you just have to look at some of the refugees who have come to this country years ago with nothing and who have worked hard to achieve their dreams- they didn’t ask for handouts. And there are others who have done the same

    • Toni, I think I am of your ethic. I have worked very hard it life. My mother died when I was 11 my father died when I was 14. I was on my own. The Gov’t of the day said to me,get out of that house. You have a week. I did. It was very hard.

    • Four days out from Christmas, Blind Citizens Australia (BCA), Deaf Australia, Homelessness Australia and Down Syndrome Australia learned they were to be subject to federal government funding cuts. Any of you think this is fair or right?

    • How much gets spent on fireworks every year around this country, how many millions did retailers just get from Australian citizens over the last month – doesn’t sound like too many ppl have much trouble spending their money and I don’t hear anyone suggesting that the millions spent on the fireworks would be better shared amongst the organizations helping the needy – so it leads me to think that ppl are happy for governments to spend up for their entertainment. Its really a matter of priorities.

      • Tony it does my head in every year with the amount spent up in smoke, not to mention pollution in waterways and smoke for asthmatics. $7 million in Sydney alone, what is wrong with people
