The average Australian household throws out 20 per cent of the food they purchase every year and one of the culprits is fruit and vegetables going bad.

Wasting food is as bad for our wallets as it is bad for the environment. So how can we keep produce fresh longer? If the products you’re buying aren’t lasting more than a couple of days, you might be storing incompatible fruits and vegetables together.

And by incompatible we mean that you don’t want to keep those fruits or veggies with high levels of ripening agent ethylene gas together as one bad apple really can spoil the whole bunch.

Here’s a list of foods you may have been storing incorrectly all this time, and where you should be putting them:

Apples – Fridge (3 weeks)

Asparagus – Fridge (3 days with trimmed ends)

Avocados – Fridge (3 days once ripe)

Bananas – Pantry (5 days once almost ripe)

Blueberries – Fridge (1 week)

Broccoli – Fridge (1 week)

Brussels sprouts – Fridge (1 week)

Green and red cabbage – Fridge (2 weeks)

Rockmelon – Fridge (5 days whole; 3 days cut)

Carrots – Fridge (2 weeks)

Cauliflower – Fridge (1 week)

Celery – Fridge (2 weeks)

Cucumbers – Fridge (5 days)

Garlic – Pantry (2 months)

Ginger – Fridge (3 weeks) or can be frozen for 6 months

Grapes – Fridge (1 week)

  1. I also store fruit in those little plastic boxes that you sometimes buy fruit in in the supermarket. I wash the fruit when i get it home dry it and put into those containers. It keeps each different fruit from each other and also stops it from getting squashed in the fridge.

  2. Never put tomatoes in the fridge especially in winter they loose there flavour in and go watery .

    • Keep my tomatoes in a bowl in the pantry. Also discovered that the cheaper one kilo bags ripen that way and get flavour – something a lot have complained is missing unless you buy them on the stem which is very expensive.

    • Have never stored my tomatoes in the fridge, just keep them on the kitchen bench, they seem to retain the flavour much better.

  3. Store veges in the bags you buy them in. Amazing results stays fresh for ages. Tip from top Chef.

  4. I think most of it is because we over shop l use all my vegies and always keep a couple if packs of frozen just in case

  5. I store strawberries by washing, hulling then drying and put into a tightly sealed container. I have kept strawberries for 3 weeks in perfect condition this way.

  6. There is one simple rule for storing fruit and veg. If it is in the fridge or on ice at the Supermarket do the same at home. If it is not refridgerated in the Supermarket then you do not put it in the fridge at home.
