Dame Judi Dench gets a tattoo at 81, and we can all relate to it 14

Dame Judi Dench is embracing change, and how. The amazing actress has gotten a tattoo of “carpe diem” on her wrist, a gift from her daughter Finty. She confessed about her new tattoo in an interview with Surrey Life and said, “That’s my motto: Seize the day. Finty gave it to me for my 81st birthday – she’s wonderful with surprises. Mind you the company of A Winter’s Tale, which I was doing at the time, used to say that it said fish of the day.”

The Earl of Wessex (left) talks with Dame Judi Dench, during a Gala Evening marking the 60th anniversary of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, at Stoke Park, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire.

Last year, talking of her hopes to be inked, she said “I am tempted to have a tattoo to mark my birthday. Finty’s very keen on me having one. There’s an Indian symbol that I like which supposedly represents life and love and everything. One of the cameramen who worked on The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel told me what it meant, but I’m a bit nervous in case I’m being set up… It might be unbelievably rude!”

Judi has famously showed off a fake tattoo tribute to movie mogul Harvey Weinstein on her bum after he cast her as Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown. She said: “He still thinks it’s tattooed. My make-up lady painted it on. He didn’t believe me so I showed him.”

Would you get a tattoo if you didn’t have one? What would it be?

    • My boys gave me a butterfly tattoo for my 60th

  2. I had a tattoo of Hawaii 50 for my 50th, a lovely wave curling onto some coral, in honour of a big birthday, a favourite TV show and a marvellous holiday destination. When I turned 60 recently I had another one done. It is a feather to represent my outward softness and flexibity and internal strength. I love both of them, they cause a lot of comment, and I have had some great conversations around the world talking about them.

  3. I had one done when I was 51 my mum was horrified! Think I’ll have one done like Judi Dench – yes seize the day! You’re never to old 😂😂😂😂

  4. Yes ! I got one for my 60th…looks like an ankle bracelet but says “made in New Zealand ” and has a silver fern hanging from it like a charm , I LOVE it

  8. Absolutely. Celebrated my 65th with a tat … “No mistakes – only lessons”. And now for my 70th “tu me monques” – translated: You are missing from me. It’s a personal decision and a personal step. I have no regrets. Waiting for 75!

  9. I must have blood drawn every month for tests, and I tease my phlebotomist that, if I ever get a tattoo, it will be a dot in the crook of my arm to mark where to stick the needle, because almost everyone who draws my blood ends up taking it from the same spot. A tattoo would save them feeling around to find the spot …
