The first 10 minutes of your day can set the tone for the rest of your day.

Highly successful people don’t start their day by battling their alarm, frantically and repeatedly hitting the ‘snooze’ button. To ensure they get off on a positive and product foot they likely follow a few simple steps at the beginning of their day, and it starts from the moment they wake up.

Write something down

If you had any good ideas or dreams while you were sleeping, getting them down straight away is good for you. Your relaxed, sleeping brain is more open to ideas than when you are preoccupied with daytime activities, so take advantage of those flashes of genius when you have them.

Forget yesterday, the future is now

If you’re still worried or upset by something that happened in the past, why? The time has passed and it is unlikely you will be able to change the events of yesterday. Learn to let things go so that you can free yourself of negativity and open yourself up to all sorts of possibilities.

Drink a glass of water

We all know how good it is to feel hydrated, and one of the things your body needs most first thing in the morning is a nice glass of water. You might be surprised at how this impacts your sense of physical wellbeing.

Stretch it out

If you want your body to perform a variety of tasks and functions throughout the day, give it a bit of a stretch first thing in the morning to get it prepared for what might lie ahead. This is especially beneficial if you are seated for a large part of the day.

Plan your day

Do you have a list of ‘To Dos’ or upcoming appointments? Spending some time first thing in the morning organising your important actions for the day will help you figure out how much time you need to get from one place to the other, as well as what will fit within your day. You might find you need to rearrange things in order to reduce the stress, and that’s okay too.

  2. Yes those first five minutes can make or break the day. It’s important to take a moment to visit the diary for the day mentally. Then yes rehydrating is very necessary and I recall my mum saying that a small squeeze of lemon juice into a glass of lukewarm water not only cleanses but gets the system going again.I also think that it’s important not to be catapulted into the day by technology and for that reason I do not turn check the phone , e mails or turn on the TV or radio until after breakfast. The morning is to be savoured. A quiet cuppa listening to and appreciating the sounds of the day coming to life give a positive spin to the day.

  4. Most people are lactose intolerant but will start the day with a cup of coffee (with milk) and a bowl of cereal (with milk)
    upsetting their digestion for the rest of the day. As spinal problems are related to what we eat and (not) drink, it is not a good start. It would be better to start the day with a glass of lukewarm water and lemon juice, as mentioned by Irene Bruschi, and wait a few minutes to break your fast with a wholemeal bread salad sandwich, with beetroot, grated carrot and zucchini, cucumber, tomato, and other vegetable matter. use margarine instead of animal fat. Sit down and take your time to enjoy this! It will set you up for the rest of the day, supply the nutrients you need, boost the immune system, and prevent disease.
    We are what we eat!

    • I would seriously question that “most” people are lactose intolerant. I have been drinking a moderate amount of milk all my life and am fit as a fiddle, also everyone I know. While I know some people have these problems, particularly those of Asian origin who don’t have the capacity to process lactose, it is hardly “most people”

    • Yes Janice, who in hell wants to jot things down, drink water, forget yesterday (it might be the best memory you’ll ever have). And why plan your day for goodness sake, aren’t we retired.

      My day starts with coffee and then I look forward to achieving three or four things for the day which could be, play golf, make the bed, have breakfast, listen to the John Laws show, or perhaps do some work on my daughter’s nouse beautification projects.

      I did enough planning, organising, leading and monitoring at work, but I’m RETIRED now!
