“Somethin’ Stupid” was never a silly song to us! 0

“And then I go and spoil it all by saying somethin’ stupid like I love you…”

It was this time in 1967 that the cover version of “Somethin’ Stupid went to number one. Recorded by Frank Sinatra and his daughter Nancy, it was originally sung by C. Carson Parks and his wife Gaile Foote, as Carson and Gaile.

In 2001, a cover version by Robbie Williams and actress Nicole Kidman reached number one as well! It seems we never get sick of these lyrics:

I know I stand in line until you think you have the time
To spend an evening with me
And if we go someplace to dance, I know that there’s a chance
You won’t be leaving with me
And afterwards we drop into a quiet little place and have a drink or two
And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like “I love you”

I can see it in your eyes
That you despise the same old lies you heard the night before
And though it’s just a line to you, for me it’s true
And never seemed so right before

I practice every day to find some clever lines to say
To make the meaning come through
But then I think I’ll wait until the evening gets late and I’m alone with you
The time is right, your perfume fills my head, the stars get red and, oh, the night’s so blue
And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like “I love you”

The story of the Frank and Nancy cover is that Frank played Parks’ recording to his daughter’s producer, Lee Hazlewood, who recalled the conversation went like this: “He asked me, ‘Do you like it?’ and I said, ‘I love it, and if you don’t sing it with Nancy, I will.’ He said, ‘We’re gonna do it, book a studio.’

The single spent four weeks at number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and is the first and only instance of a father-daughter number-one song.
