This song is a medley of two songs from a 1960s hit musical.

It was the theme song to the whole musical and American soul and RnB band, The 5th Dimension, recorded it as a single shortly after the musical was released.

It won the Grammy Award for Best Recording of the Year and also for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Group a year later in 1970.

It is, of course the theme song to Hair….

  1. I’m still singing it on a regular basis. It’s a great song for a road trip because everyone can sing the chorus – quite robustly at times! I changed the words decades ago. My chorus goes, ‘This is the mooning of a large, ugly, hairy arse; a large, ugly, hair arse; a hairy arse; a hairy arse’ and that segues nicely into, ‘Let the sunshine, let the sunshine out’ etc

  2. I saw this show also in the 70s – went with my father and we had seats in the 4th row from the front…………to my horror; he produced a pair of binoculars for the last scene…….!!

  3. Yes I too saw it in the 70s and was devastated not to be able to dance on stage at the end as I was recovering from food poisoning and was too weak. Saw its revival at the theatre attached to Sydney Uni (can’t remember the name) on Parramatta road. Loved the show, loved the songs and loved the sentiment. I’m still an ageing hippy and living in Byron Bay now.

  4. so loved that..saw the musical changed my life..I went in another direction…stopped ironing my husbands underpants….and had a mind altering drug..was lost to the revolution….
