35 of Bill Cosby’s victims show bravery on the cover of New York Magazine 74

Since the very first time that Bill Cosby’s true nature was revealed, there have been many women feeding through their story, one by one. And now, 35 of those victims have come forward and been photographed for a truly haunting cover of New York magazine.

It’s gone from bad to worse for the once revered comedian, but now Bill Cosby’s name couldn’t be more tarnished. From his former friends wanting their names taken out of his book, to cancellations of shows and appearances, those are the least of his problems.

For his alleged victims, his silence is earth shatteringly loud, but they won’t stop until everyone in the world knows just how callous and devious this man was. And how much he didn’t want their story to be heard, or them to be seen.

“The group of women Cosby allegedly assaulted functions almost as a longitudinal study – both for how an individual woman, on her own, deals with such trauma over the decades and for how the culture at large has grappled with rape over the same time period,” the magazine wrote.

“In the ’60s, when the first alleged assault by Cosby occurred, rape was considered to be something violent committed by a stranger … But among younger women, and particularly online, there is a strong sense now that speaking up is the only thing to do, that a woman claiming her own victimhood is more powerful than any other weapon in the fight against rape”.

One of his accusers, Lili Bernard told the magazine, “In the early 1990s, in my mid-20s, Bill Cosby mentored me. He gained my total trust and then he drugged me without my knowledge. He raped me. I wouldn’t call him crazy … I felt that he was very much in control of his behaviour”.

As of yet, Cosby has not been charged with a crime, however in a 2005 court transcript, he was recorded as saying he intended to give Quaaludes to young women with whom he wanted to have sex.

In his own defence, at the time, he said, “I’m a pretty decent reader of people and their emotions in these romantic sexual things, whatever you want to call them”.

What’s more upsetting to his accusers is that for years, Hollywood and just about everyone in entertainment tried to cover up Cosby’s terrible secret. Even 10 years ago, he could have been charged, but the case was settled and forgotten. Everyone refused to believe the eccentric, loveable man on their TVs was doing unimaginable things behind the scenes.

According to NY Mag, The National Enquirer had planned to run a big story detailing one of the women’s accounts, but the magazine pulled it when Cosby agreed to give them a two-page exclusive telling his side.

So now it’s the world’s turn to listen to these women.

Tell us, are you becoming jaded by the previously hidden criminal behaviour of some of the world’s biggest stars? Is it time Bill Cosby handed himself in for what he has allegedly done?

  1. I always loved him. It makes me sick. But whether it’s him or Rolf Harris or Joe Blow down the street, men just seem to constantly get away with it. Eve n when convicted, it is never enough. Are we too soft? Laws need changing, women don’t need more rights, they need the right ones and our governments no matter who they are need to do a big overhaul of our laws, because what these and ever other woman goes through from something like this and the race and murder of women gets worse and worse. Stop talking and start acting and if one person says that a woman has to stop wearing certain clothes or stop acting a certain way, I’ll scream. No-one deserves this, no-one!!

    • I agree totally. I also think there is a greater onus on men – fathers, grandfathers to instill good principles into their sons and grandsons that real men don’t rape and that women are to be respected.
Unfortunately, there seems to be less respect for women than ever and it is an issue that needs addressing given than women are being murdered at an alarming rate in domestic and other violence.

  2. I don’t condone this mans behaviour but am puzzled as to why these woman didn’t blow the whistle as soon as it happened to them…. Why wait many years?

    • In those days it was so much harder to stand up against someone famous. And I am betting that most of those ladies thought they were the only ones so had no support.

    • A lot of the time you need to be mature and be able to cope with the fall out! If this was brought out back then when his star was shining so bright who would have believed a young woman about the great Bill Cosby? They have been to hell and back over the years and this will be the last part of the jig saw so they can now heal? Even if it comes to nothing more than a flurry of media attention they are no longer ruled by it!

    • Thank you for your replies I can understand their reasonings about not coming forward at the time …. It would of been hard to fight a famous man who would of had all the backing and money he needed to fight their claims….but if they had taken silence money off Him would that not be wrong of them also?

    • True, Christine; if they were offered “hush” money when they first made the allegations, singlehanded on its occurrence, for those were how things were handled back then, so no recourse now.

    • Have you ever had a family member raped? I have. And it is soooooo hard for them to come forward. They live for so long thinking it is their fault. It takes MASSIVE COURAGE for them to come forward.

    • Who cares if they took hush money, they probably used it for counselling. This reaction is exactly why people don’t come forward, all the questioning and justification would be exhausting at a time when you can’t deal with simply surviving.

    • Because as a victim of abuse ..i didnt come out of the closet for years eith..unless one has been there ..dont say things…many young children dont comemout till well into their 30/40,s

  3. What is also sad this was covered up by some a few years ago Those people should also be totally ashamed they did this They too are guilty of aiding what happened to these woman If he is found guilty let’s hope he gets what he deserves So sick of these so called celebrities thinking they can get away with this

  4. Are all his victims white women?

    • After reading part of the article so far, it seems others are still to come forward and some still feel afraid to. Because of that….it’s hard to tell.

    • I saw one of his victims tonight who appeared to be African American. This would make it appear that his actions were not solely directed at white women.

  5. The thing is that the filthy old goat, the same as Rolf Harris have lived their lives with kudos and celebrity of being wonderful, kind and charitable men—–hiding and denying their evil doings. In a few years they will be dead. They won’t care. It’s their families that have to live with their shame!

  6. I’m guessing, because these dirty men have so much money they seem to be able to stall JUSTICE,do you think…….

  7. I never liked him or his show…he always ‘irked’ me …even as a young girl…dirty creep…!! I hope justice will be served…
