The Starts at Sixty community is real… Coffee anyone?

Feb 10, 2014

Looking at the “Recent Posts by Others” section of the Starts at Sixty Facebook page I noticed the following:

“I am over 60 and have just moved to Brisbane so am looking for like minded people. I enjoy the theatre, sports, going to the movies, markets and meeting new people.”

I’ve seen similar comments before but haven’t acted, but this time I wrote a little note suggesting we meet for coffee.

Coffee

So I today, I had the great pleasure of meeting another Starts at Sixty member for coffee and talk (lots of both) – had a fabulous time thanks Hazel and look forward to meeting again.

Now Starts at Sixty is not an unofficial branch of “Herman’s Happiness Club” and I’m sure Rebecca didn’t have that particular role in mind when she started this community.

However think back, where did you meet your “besties”? Apart from school, many of my friendships date from membership of service organisations or common interest community groups.

Back in the mid seventies I was one of the first women to join Sydney Jaycees when they welcomed female members.  At no time did I think I was joining a dating agency, but somewhere between co-ordinating a public speaking competition, participating in many Jaycee projects and writing articles for their magazine, I met my darling GOM (Grumpy Old Man).

Just last weekend we spoke to a man we’ve known for over 40 years.  We met while building sets, acting, making coffee and selling tickets at the Genesian Theatre Company in Sydney, which is quite an achievement considering the oldest of us is only 39 (okay… plus tax)!

Starts at Sixty is first and foremost an online community and you may well prefer it stays that way, terrific!  But if you see someone on the website who lives near you, why not contact them and have a coffee?

In fact, let’s jump in – anyone in Brisbane and surrounds who would like to meet local Starts at Sixty members for coffee and a chat sometime soon, say so in comments and we’ll organise a coffee morning before the month is much older.

Looking forward to meeting you in the real world,

Karen.
