Here are the destinations where your Aussie dollar is worth its weight in gold

If you’re thinking of travelling overseas in the next few months, the dollar isn’t going to be doing you any favours. The Aussie dollar is currently buying 0.70 USD and it’s expected to fall even further as we head towards the end of the year.

So your trip to London, New York or Bali may be on hold for now. You’d be better off looking for some new places to head off to.

Expedia‘s Foreign Exchange Index has revealed that New Zealand, Brazil, Colombia, Russia or Norway are the only destinations where the Australian dollar goes further than it did a year ago.

The online travel agent has noticed a surge in demand for travel to New Zealand, with more of us heading to Fiordland, Taupo and Napier.

International destinations, like New Zealand, are seeing an upturn in business as we attempt to squeeze every last drop of juice from our holiday dollar. Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that in the last financial year, we made 1.2 million trips to see our Kiwi neighbours.

Most of us who are thinking of travelling to foreign shores are looking for ways to save money and exchange rates are always going to be key.

So where should you be researching for your next trip?

Japan is looking better by the day as the Australian dollar has fallen 4 per cent against the yen, and Qantas have introduced new flights from August this year, with direct, overnight services from Brisbane and Sydney to Tokyo. The new direct, overnight flights to Haneda Airport, close to downtown Tokyo, and are an easy option for travellers who want to connect with destinations across Japan using Japan Airlines.
