No doubt you’ve ever heard a lot about housing affordability and the challenges facing young home buyers.

But you probably haven’t heard the issue told like Derryn Hinch tells it.

The outspoken senator has slammed a proposal to allow young people to put their superannuation into a special account to help them save for a house.

He told the ABC’s AM program that young Australians had unrealistic expectations about home ownership.

“I get it’s unpopular to say this — but owning your own home is not an Australian right. It’s a dream and everybody wants to do it,” he said.

“I think [my parents] were in their 40s before they could afford to buy their first home.

“It’s not something you’re meant to get — the two-car garage [house] when you’re 22.”

But he hasn’t just slammed millennials.

He’s also taken aim at their parents, people your children’s age, about their attitudes towards home ownership.

“I think… that this generation and the one before think that’s the way it has to be — well I’m afraid it’s not that way,” he said.

For a lot of older people his words are sure to echo what they’ve said about millennials, although there are some who will be quick to point out the differences in situations the millennial generation and ours faced.

So, why does Senator Hinch agree with the superannuation proposal?

Well, as he pointed out, he believes that superannuation is for your retired years.

“Hopefully you have enough money to keep you off the pension — [then] the pension goes to people who don’t have that much money and need a pension,” he said.

“This will just push more people onto the pension, and how the hell are you going to fund it?”

What do you think? Do you agree with what Derryn Hinch said?
