More than 14,000 Australian consumers have voted for their favourite product of the year, with the 2019 winners announced at Quay Restaurant in Sydney on Thursday night.

Each product was measured on a range of factors, including how unique it is, if it makes consumers excited, whether it delivers on what consumers want, if it provides value for money and how likely consumers are to buy it again.

The results of this year’s vote found 10 of the 50 winners went to new products, specifically those that offer healthy and allergy-free alternatives. Coles scooped an incredible 11 awards, IGA’s Metcash won 10 and Aldi won nine awards.

The research found consumers are open to trying new brands on a regular basis and that more than half of Aussie shoppers have tried new brands in the past year. In addition, two in five consumers said they would purchase a product they hadn’t tried before if it won Product of the Year.

Convenient foods also increased in popularity this year, with a notable influx in vegetarian easy-option foods. In terms of supermarkets, Woolworths was found to offer more organic, healthy and fresh products, while Coles is associated with better deals and promotions.

The results also found customers think the range of products available, the location of a store and the deals and promotions available are important in picking which supermarket to shop at.

Coles won big with its Finest Sourdough and Pane Di Casa range taking out the top bakery and brioche prize, its Ultimate 40 Choc Brownie winning best biscuit, cookie or slice, the Ultimate Mini Apple and Cherry pies taking the top spot for cakes and pies and its Spinach, Ricotta and Fetta Rolls and Beef and Onion Party Sausage Rolls taking out the heat and eat prize.

Coles also won household cleaning product of the year with its Green Action Household Cleaners, while its Ultra Floor Cleaning System and Wet Floor Wipes taking out the floor category. Other Coles products that won included its Tiramisu, Slow Cooked Range, Flat Buns, Sweet Potato Chips and Organic Roasted Seaweed Snacks.

Aldi products also claimed a number of titles across a range of categories including wins for its brand of Organic Kombucha, Choceur Caramel Filled Chocolates, First Aid Strips, Has No Gluten Free Bars, Oh SO Natural Super Food Powders and Green Action Household Cleaners winning big.

Meanwhile, IGA and Metcash’s Muesli, Crunch Oat Clusters, Tomato and BBQ Sauces, Mixed Rice Crackers and Brie and Camembert Soft Cheeses all received nods.

Other notable winners include Mentholatum’s Anti Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner, Uncle Ben’s Rice Cups, Heinz Pasta Sauce and Bird’s Eye Deli Range.

“I’m thrilled at the increase in innovative healthy-option products that are being made available on shelf and being entered into the Awards,” Product of the Year Director Sarah Connelly said in a statement. “It’s a trend that we’ve not seen much of before in the history of the Awards and it signals increasing consumer demand for manufacturers to innovate in these areas. These options are becoming far more mainstream and more affordable than they have ever been before.”
