Mark Beretta felt like he’s let the team down when he didn’t make an appearance on Sunrise yesterday.

But he had a good excuse for calling in sick.

The 51-year-old sports reporter was in hospital after having a waterskiing accident on the weekend, ripping his quadriceps muscle off the bone and smashing his knee cap, and underwent surgery.

Talking to the rest of the Sunrise crew Beretta said he’d probably felt better. “I was having the best day ever.”

He’s not new to waterskiing, as he’d won 10 Australian water ski championships, but it just goes to show, accidents do happen, even to the experts. Beretta admitted he might have been reliving his glory days and going a bit too hard, and you are inclined to do at his age.

Prior to the accident Beretta even posted some images on Instagram, showing off on the water, and calling it his ‘happy place’.

He’s now well familiar with the Sunshine Coast hospital that he was taken to after the accident, as he’d just been there on the Friday before for a fundraiser.

He’s told the Sunrise crew he’d be back on deck later in the week but with limited mobility.

Have you discovered you can’t do things like you used to, with disastrous results while trying, like Beretta?
