Optus customers owed refunds after pre-paid blunder

The error impacted prepaid device, prepaid mobile and prepaid plan customers.

If you’ve had an Optus pre-paid mobile plan over the last few years, the telco could owe you some data.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) revealed today that Optus had agreed to compensate customers after providing them with less data than it had advertised.

There were three instances in 2015 and 2016 in which Optus cut the data, calls and/or texts available with some of its pre-paid products without informing the customers affected. That meant the customers were getting less service than they’d been promised when buying the plan.

“Mobile providers must provide the ‘value’ and benefits they advertise,” ACCC commissioner Sarah Court said.

Customers affected included those who bought pre-paid mobile broadband devices, pre-paid mobiles and pre-paid mobile plans. Optus has promised to give customers credit to make up for what they missed or a refund.

“Optus Prepaid customers who may be entitled to a credit should visit the Optus website or the outlet where they bought the prepaid product,” Court said.
