Grab a jacket… how about a bed jacket?

May 17, 2014

Goodbye summer, hello cooler weather…

The days have been glorious in the part of Australia where I live and so far summer has been reluctant to let go its reign.

I rose early this morning, however, and immediately noticed the cooler change.Narelle clogs

I dug around in the wardrobe and retrieved my trusty old maroon dressing gown, minus a few buttons, and my fluffy red clogs (a gift all the way from Holland, from my daughter’s travels) proudly making their first appearance for 2014.

Padding my way to the kitchen, I made myself a cuppa, then went back to bed for a wee read before addressing the day and preparing for work.

As I returned to bed, propped myself up on my fluffed pillows and settled back with my Kindle, a Maggie O’Dell crime novel and a mug of hot tea (hubby was still snoring), I felt the cool chill of winter’s breath on my arms and shoulders. And I got to thinking about “bed jackets”.

Whatever happened to the humble bed jacket?

Bedjacket

I remember my mum always wore a bed jacket. She had frilly sheer ones, woolly crocheted ones, lacy ones, pretty ones. Just the thing to keep your shoulders and arms snug while lolly-gagging about in bed on a lazy, cool morning. Methinks I shall ponder on this and mayhap dig out the old crochet hook and yarn. A mission, while watching TV on cold winter nights.

I remember hand-sewing a seersucker “brunch coat” in grade six sewing class (and not being happy about modelling it at the fashion parade).

Did anyone have a sheer sexy negligee like the movie stars in the 1950s and ’60s? Mayhap Victoria’s Secrets would be interested in the resurrection and remodelling of the snugly bed jacket…

Amazing what runs through an over-60’s mind at 6am!
