Today’s Big Question: Organ donors

Jul 15, 2013

These are the big questions where you can have your say. This is an open space for discussion about some very confronting debates in out society. How do you feel? What do you think? These are the real Q&A for the Australian over 60s today.

“Should ALL people automatically be compulsory organ donors unless they register NOT to be?”

FOR Yes, some people would be happy to be donors but they just don’t get around to signing up. If it is an automatic thing, and compulsory, and everyone knows this, then we would shorten the waiting lists for transplants and more people could be saved. It would also take away the trauma of a grieving family having to make that decision. If people are STRONGLY against it they could discuss it with family and de-register.

AGAINST. No. It would be a violation of our right to decide what to do with our body. Just as people perhaps to forget to sign up as donors, they may also forget to UN-register. It must remain a voluntary process and we just have to accept that many healthy organs will be lost – that’s life.
