Rock icon’s death compared to the loss of John Lennon, Elvis

Rock icon Chris Cornell's death has been compared to the loss of Elvis, John Lennon and Freddie Mercury.

Remember the day you heard about the deaths of Elvis, John Lennon and Freddie Mercury?

Well, that’s how a lot of rock fans have been left feeling during the past week following the tragic death of rock icon Chris Cornell.

Cornell, who fronted the ’80s rock band Soundgarden, was found unresponsive in his hotel room last week and died a few hours later.

The coroner has ruled the 52-year-old’s death a suspected suicide.

He was farewelled overnight in a star-studded funeral in Hollywood overnight, where he was remembered as one of the greats of rock history.

Among those in attendance were Brad Pitt and Billy Idol.

NewsCorp reports that Cornell’s Audioslave bandmate Tom Morello gave a powerful eulogy, describing him as “melodic as The Beatles, as rocking as Sabbath and as haunting ad Edgar Allan Poe”.

He was laid to rest in the Garden of Legends in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, with his tombstone describing him as the “voice of our generation and an artist for all time”.

Fans have compared Cornell’s death to that of Elvis, Freddie Mercury and John Lennon.

As NewsCorp reports, one fan told reporters outside the cemetery there will never be another Cornell, something many of us no doubt remember saying about Elvis, John Lennon and Freddie Mercury.

“He’s a modern day Freddie Mercury. I needed some closure on this.” fan Melody Andrade told the media.

Do you remember the feeling you got when you heard about the deaths of Elvis, Freddie Mercury and John Lennon? Were you a fan of Chris Cornell?
