Queensland Health has caused quite a stir on social media after encouraging the public to “give yourself a hand” and take up masturbation in an effort to combat stigma and promote the health benefits of self-pleasure.

After initially encouraging the country to pull together to combat Covid-19, the department then delivered the pro masturbation health message via Facebook advising Queenslanders that, “masturbation is a normal and healthy part of a person’s sexual experience and a great way to discover what you are comfortable with”.

“The best part is, it’s for everyone — and also offers a wealth of health and sexual health benefits,” the post read.

The campaign aims to educate the public about the health benefits of masturbation, breaking stigmas, and advises parents and carers on how to have a healthy conversation with their children on the subject.

Understandably the post caused mass debate among followers and was met with hilarious reactions and a healthy measure of fun wordplay.

“Lmao, just started reading this to my 16-year-old daughter. She couldn’t run away fast enough. So I stalked her and read louder. Thanks for the laugh.”

“Gives the slogan ‘arm yourself’ a new meaning,” joked one follower.

“Dr Young is gone for a minute and this is what happens?!”

“Just brilliant! I wonder when all the funny comments will reach a climax?”

“Well if it’s that important I think I’ll take the day off work and look after my health.”

“Got your finger on the button for this one Queensland Health. Great to see everyone pulling together through this hard time.”

Although the post was met with light-heartedness initially, many praised Queensland Health for its positive message.

“Thank you for trying to remove the shame many people feel around their bodies. It’s sad that in 2021 we still have people who think this is inappropriate or dirty. To many this post just seems like a good laugh, but you could be helping a number of people feel more comfortable with themselves. Thank you.”

“This is a great post! Yay for promoting healthy sexuality.”

“YES! Thank you for normalising the most normal and healthy and important act of self-love we all have access to.”

After providing useful insight into breaking stigmas and sexual health the article provided readers with some helpful advice.

“Sexual pleasure is very individual and looks different for everyone. Remember that masturbation is a healthy and safe sexual activity that can make you feel relaxed, happier, and more comfortable within yourself,” it read.

“If you have any questions or are unsure on how to discuss this topic with your children, please see your GP for professional and personalised advice.”
