A gymnast has left a crowd in awe after pulling off a never-before-seen dismount during a stunning balance beam performance – and it even left the commentators gobsmacked.

Simone Biles has been inundated with praise as a video of the incredible move is widely shared across social media, showing her flying, flipping and tumbling through the air to land perfectly on the mat below.

It makes the 22-year-old the first person in history to ever attempt and land the double-double (double-twisting, double somersault) dismount and she appeared overjoyed as she flashed a beaming smile afterwards, to a standing ovation from spectators. Five-time Olympic medalist and 14-time world champion Biles was competing at the US Gymnastics Championships in Kansas City, Missouri, as she chases her sixth national title.

The video is already going viral, with many heaping praise on Biles. One person even commented: “Wow. That’s the only word I have to describe @SimoneBiles I know there are some amazing athletes on Planet Earth right now, but she has to be considered the world’s greatest living athlete, right?”

Another social media user wrote: “I JUST SCREAMED. SIMONE DID THE DOUBLE DOUBLE OFF BEAM IN COMPETITION. AND IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.” And one wrote: “Jesus. I felt my heart pounding! She is extraordinary!!!” and one added: “Unbelievable. This is extraordinary!”

It was a great end to the day for the sports great, as it came just hours after she secured herself as the first woman to attempt a triple-double – two flips and three twists in the air – during the floor exercise. Sadly, she just missed the landing on that occasion.

It comes after gymnastics was thrown into the spotlight once again earlier this year when Katelyn Ohashi got the crowd on their feet in one of the most amazing performances spectators have been treated to in recent years, showing off her gymnastic skills and vibrant energy to a seriously cool medley of hits.

The highly talented athlete gave it her all with impressive flips and sky-high splits, leaving everyone in absolute awe and clapping along to her choice of music, which included Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’, The Jackson 5’s ‘I Want You Back’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’.

In the routine, which has been shared millions of times on social media, Katelyn begins with a sequence of back flips, sending her up into the air and landing firmly on her feet.

The gymnast then proceeds to dance on the spot before launching into more backflips, a cartwheel, down into the splits and straight back up. It is here you can see the rest of the gymnasts sharing in the excitement of the routine clapping along in sync and having their own little dance party side stage.

Katelyn didn’t stop there with kicks, front flips and turns, all the while with a huge grin on her face. Once she finished, she ran over to her fellow team mates who were all clapping in support of her along with the rest of the crowd, who were all on their feet by this point. It’s no surprise the gymnast received a perfect 10 for the jaw-dropping routine.
