Abused and abandoned dog gets new ‘leash’ on life

When two animal welfare heroes were made aware of a dog living alone in a former crack house in the middle of winter, they didn’t think twice. They raced to the address and took the dog in.

The dog was a malnourished pit bull and needed a lot of tender love and care. The dog’s rescuers Erica Mahnken and her fiancé, Michael Favor, didn’t have the space to keep the dog but had some friends at a fire station that were happy to house it for a while. The crew of the New York fire station Fort Pitt fell in love with the pitt bull and asked to adopt it three days later.

The new firehouse dog is loving her new job and is healthy and happy again.  She plays with the firefighters, hangs out in the kitchen, and goes on calls in her own special seat.  The firefighters even started her own Instagram account so people could share their joy in the abandoned pit bull they now call Ash.
