It’s that time of year again…

Spring is in the air and what better way to celebrate and blow out those winter blues with a spring clean? Why not downsize at the same time?

Spring cleaning your home will not only make you feel good but also save you time and money. I guarantee you’ll find at least two things you forgot you had and can put back into use or items you no longer need because the kids have left the nest!
Where do you start? Let’s use the kitchen as an example.

If one or all of your children have moved out, the items needed in the kitchen will be a lot less. Work out how much you need of each item on a daily basis, what you need when you have the maximum number of guests to entertain and get rid of the rest!

What happens if you need it after you’ve chucked it out? Don’t worry about it now. In most cases people hold on to triple the amount of things they need “just in case” and the “just in case” scenario never happens to the extent we think it will.

Downsizing while spring cleaning is a fantastic time to get out your good dinner set – that one put away in the special cupboard for those special occasions – and start using it. What about the cutlery set you leave in the box ready for that dinner party? Bring it all out and use it. You could give your children your day to day dinner sets, cutlery and items you no longer need. It’s a great time to distribute the items you would like your family to have “your way” and to see them get the use.
Downsizing is all about living with less, and living with and using your best stuff.

It’s surprising the amount of things we hold onto for our kids after they have moved out. This is a good time to ask if they would like to take their furniture or items you are still holding onto for them. If they don’t, you can then decide whether you give it away, throw it away, donate it or sell it. We don’t realise but sometimes these items can add up to a small trip or weekend away. Even if they are donated, you will still get that feeling of helping others and knowing you are living with exactly what you need in a clutter free home. No more wasting time looking for things.

Once you’ve finished on the kitchen, you can start on the linen cupboard and before you know it, you are spring cleaned and downsized. How is that going to make you feel? Springtastic!
