Three tips for freezing avocados

There’s been a lot said about the cost of avocados lately. Of course, much of it is exaggerated beyond compare; for example, the idea that the price of avocados is preventing young people from being able to afford to buy a house.

That is clearly ridiculous, but the main thing we can take away is that avocados are generally really very expensive at the best of times, which sucks because they are delicious.

Not only do they taste great, but they’re really good for you, containing lots of good fats. Many would say that avocado is nature’s butter! Whether you have it on toast, in a salad, or as guacamole in a taco, you’ll love these tips to freeze them so you always have some on hand.

1. In halves

This is probably the simplest way to freeze avocado. Slice them in half as you normally would, and coat the exposed flesh in lemon juice. Then you just need to seal them in a plastic zip lock bag, taking care to remove as much air as possible.

2. Diced

Dice up the flesh of your avocados and toss with lemon juice. Follow the same steps to store them in plastic as with the halves.

3. Puree

This is great if you are going to be using mashed avocado anyway (say, guacamole). Simply puree in a blender with some lemon juice, then store in a plastic zip lock bag ,or you can even pour the puree into ice cube trays to freeze (popping the cubes into a zip lock bag once frozen).
